Tour overview

Why travellers choose this journey

This is Morocco for travellers who have two days and refuse to waste them. In forty-eight hours you cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stand inside the earthen towers of Ait Ben Haddou, follow the Dades canyon into the desert south and arrive in Merzouga in time to ride into the dunes as the light turns copper.

It moves quickly — that is the point — but it never feels like a bus tour. You travel privately, stop where the view deserves it, take mint tea with people who live along the road, and sleep one night under a sky that most travellers only see in photographs.

Perfect for: Travellers with a short window in Morocco, couples adding the Sahara to a Marrakech city break, and anyone who wants the desert without a week of driving.

This is an express, fast-paced Sahara experience. Two days cover a lot of ground and driving days are long by design — if you prefer a gentler rhythm, the 3-day routes cover the same landscapes with more time at each stop.

Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley
Day01
Day 01
MarrakechTizi n'TichkaAit Ben HaddouOuarzazateDades Valley

Over the Atlas to the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs

We collect you early from your riad and leave Marrakech while the city is still quiet. The road climbs steadily into the High Atlas, past walnut terraces and Berber villages the colour of the mountain itself, until it reaches the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres. After the descent we turn towards Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified ksar on the old caravan route to Timbuktu — you'll walk up through its lanes to the granary at the summit for the view over the palm valley. Lunch in the village, then Ouarzazate and the long, cinematic drive east into the Dades Valley, where the rock formations glow red at the end of the afternoon.

Along the way

  • Tizi n'Tichka pass and Atlas viewpoints
  • UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou ksar
  • Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital
  • Sunset over the Dades rock formations

Todra Gorge and the Dunes of Erg Chebbi

After breakfast we drive into Todra Gorge, where 300-metre cliffs close to a corridor barely wide enough for the river and the road — the acoustics alone are worth the stop. From Tinghir the landscape opens into pure pre-Sahara: black hamada, date palmeries at Erfoud and the market town of Rissani, still the trading heart of the Tafilalt. By late afternoon the first orange dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. You leave the vehicle, meet your camels and ride out over the ridges to camp as the sun drops. Dinner is served under the tent, followed by drums around the fire and a sky with no light pollution for hundreds of kilometres.

Along the way

  • Todra Gorge canyon walk
  • Tinghir palm oasis panorama
  • Rissani market and Ziz date palms
  • Sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi
  • Berber music under the stars
