Is this tour private?

Yes. Every journey we operate is private by default: your own vehicle, your own driver-guide and your own pace. Shared departures can be arranged on request for solo travellers who prefer to join others.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Completely. Most travellers adjust something — an extra night in the desert, a slower morning in Dades, a detour to the Valley of Roses or Skoura palm grove. Tell us what matters to you and we rebuild the route around it.

Are camel rides included?

A camel excursion into the dunes at sunset or sunrise is included on every itinerary that overnights in Merzouga. If you prefer not to ride, a 4x4 transfer to the camp is arranged instead at no extra cost.

What type of accommodation is provided?

Carefully selected riads, kasbah hotels and guesthouses along the route, plus a luxury Sahara camp with private en-suite tents, real beds and hot water. Standard and premium options are available for every journey.

How much driving is involved?

Southern Morocco is vast and beautiful, and part of the experience is the road itself. Expect four to six hours of driving on the longer days, broken up by viewpoints, villages, tea stops and photo moments.

Layers. Days are warm, desert nights are cool, and the High Atlas can be cold in winter. Bring comfortable shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a scarf for the wind, and a light jacket even in summer.

Four days is the length at which Morocco stops being a series of stops and becomes a story. You begin in Marrakech, cross the High Atlas, sleep in the Dades Valley, spend a full evening and morning in the Sahara, then turn north through the Ziz palm corridor, the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas and the alpine streets of Ifrane before arriving in Fes.

It is the most complete of our classic routes, and the one we recommend most often. Nothing is rushed: there is time to walk in Todra Gorge, to watch sunrise from a dune, to stop for tea in a village that isn't on any itinerary, and to arrive in Fes unhurried rather than exhausted.

Marrakech, the High Atlas and Ait Ben Haddou

A morning departure takes you out of Marrakech and up the switchbacks of the Tizi n'Tichka, with argan trees giving way to bare red ridges and snow-lined peaks in winter. At Ait Ben Haddou you cross the riverbed and climb through the ksar's earthen lanes to the old granary, looking out over the valley that has stood in for a dozen ancient cities on film. After lunch, Ouarzazate and its Taourirt kasbah, then the road east through Skoura's palm grove and the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to Dades, arriving in time for the last light on the canyon walls.

Todra Gorge and the ride into the Sahara

The morning belongs to Todra Gorge — a short, level walk between vertical limestone walls with the river running beside you and climbers strung above. Onwards through Tinghir's palmery and the fossil workshops of Erfoud, where 400-million-year-old marine creatures are cut and polished from the local stone. Erg Chebbi rises ahead in the afternoon. Camels are waiting at the edge of the sand; you ride out across the ridgeline, watch the sun set from the top of a dune, and arrive at camp to dinner, drums and stars.

Dune sunrise, Rissani and the Ziz Valley north

Wake early — the sunrise over Erg Chebbi is the single image most travellers take home. After breakfast at camp we drive to Rissani, the old caravan capital of the Tafilalt, where the souk still trades dates, spices and donkeys three mornings a week. The road north follows the Ziz: a green ribbon of a hundred thousand palms cutting through bare rock, with a viewpoint above the valley that stops everyone. Lunch en route, then the climb to Midelt between the High and Middle Atlas, an apple-growing town with cool mountain air.

Cedar forests, Ifrane and arrival in Fes

A gentler final day through the Middle Atlas. We stop in the cedar forest near Azrou, where Barbary macaques come down to the roadside and the trees are old enough to have names, then pass through Ifrane — pitched roofs, flower beds and an improbable Swiss-alpine look. From there it is a straightforward descent into Fes, arriving in the afternoon so you have time to settle into your riad and walk into the medina before dinner.
