Fes to the edge of the Sahara
A long, spectacular first day. We leave Fes early, climb into the Middle Atlas past Ifrane's alpine streets and stop in the cedar forest near Azrou to walk among the old trees and meet the resident macaques. Lunch in Midelt, then the descent through the Tizi n'Talghemt pass and along the Ziz Valley, where an unbroken palm oasis runs for kilometres between rock walls. The dunes appear in the late afternoon: you swap the vehicle for a camel and ride into Erg Chebbi for sunset, dinner and a night at camp.
